Every week someone walks into my clinic and says: "Ryan, I've tried keto, intermittent fasting, GM diet, even that soup diet my cousin swears by. Nothing sticks." And I smile, because I know exactly why.


They were never on the wrong diet. They were on someone else's diet.

For over two decades I've worked with Olympic athletes, Bollywood actors and CEOs, and the one thing I've seen again and again is this: two people can eat the exact same meal and one will lose fat while the other gains it. That's not willpower. That's genetics.


What is a DNA-based diet?


A DNA-based diet, also called a nutrigenomic diet or gene-based diet plan, uses a simple cheek-swab test to read specific genes that decide how your body handles food. We look at how you metabolise carbs, fats, caffeine, lactose, gluten, vitamin D, folate (the famous MTHFR gene), iron, salt sensitivity, and even how fast you build muscle or store belly fat.


The science is called nutrigenomics — the study of how your genes interact with what you eat. And no, it isn't a wellness fad. Gene-nutrient interactions for things like lactose intolerance (LCT gene), caffeine metabolism (CYP1A2), folate processing (MTHFR) and saturated fat response (APOA2) are backed by solid peer-reviewed research.


Does genetic testing for diet actually work?


Honest answer? Yes, when done right. No, when it's a gimmick.

I'll be straight with you. The market is full of cheap "DNA diet kits" that test 5 genes and spit out a generic PDF. That's not nutrigenomics. That's marketing.


A proper DNA diet test in India should:

  • Be interpreted by a qualified nutritionist, not an app

  • Combine your genetic data with your lifestyle, blood work and goals

  • Give you a plan you can actually eat, with Indian foods, not almond flour pancakes


When all four boxes are ticked, the results are remarkable. I've seen clients break through plateaus they fought for years — simply because their body was wired for higher protein and lower carbs, or because their MTHFR variant meant they needed methylated folate from leafy greens, not synthetic supplements.



My personal POV, why I've believed in this for 20 years


I'll be honest with you. When I first started recommending genetic testing nearly two decades ago, most Indian doctors thought I was selling snake oil. Today, the same hospitals refer patients to me for it.


I've believed in personalised nutrition since the very beginning of my career because I watched my own clients prove it. A vegetarian Bollywood actor needed to bulk up — generic high-protein advice failed him. A medically valid DNA-based diet test in India typically ranges between ₹25,000 and ₹100,000 depending on the number of genes analysed and the depth of consultation. Cheap ₹5,000–₹10,000 kits exist — I'd advise staying away from them. You're making lifelong decisions; cutting corners on the data is a false economy.

The bottom line


One diet does not fit all. It never did. Your DNA is the most personalised piece of information you'll ever own about yourself, and using it to design how you eat is, in my view, the single biggest shift in nutrition science of our generation.

EA88 bữa mình ghé thử cho biết vì thấy mọi người nhắc hoài, kiểu vào xem giao diện ra sao thôi. Mở lên cái đập vào mắt là tiêu đề H1 “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” to rõ, nhìn phát biết ngay trang này đang theo dạng bài mẫu. Kéo xuống chút thì họ chia nội dung thành mấy heading kiểu câu hỏi, mình nhớ có “Lorem Ipsum là gì?” nên đọc lướt khá tiện, không phải mò. Nội dung bên dưới đúng kiểu đoạn văn dài để tham khảo, có đoạn nhắc tới Cicero với cuốn “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” nhìn cũng thú vị, như kiểu trích dẫn cho đúng “chuẩn” ấy. Mình thích nhất là cách họ…

Mình chỉ quan tâm nhanh phần kèo nhà cái với tỷ lệ kèo bóng đá hôm nay, thấy để ngay ngắn, số liệu nằm rõ ràng nên liếc phát là hiểu đang nói trận nào. Lướt xuống chút có mục bài mới đăng nên cũng dễ biết họ có cập nhật đều không, khỏi phải đoán. Nói chung mình không rành sâu nhưng cách trình bày bảng tỷ lệ dạng cột nhìn gọn, chữ với số tách bạch nên đỡ bị loạn trên màn…
