Why Your “Healthy” Diet May Still Be Destroying Your Metabolic Health

You exercise. You watch what you eat. You count your calories. You buy the expensive supplements. You have probably even switched to foods labelled “healthy”.

And yet, something still doesn't feel right.

Your weight isn't moving.

Your energy is inconsistent.

You feel hungry again soon after eating.

Your blood sugar isn't where you want it to be.


So you try harder.

More cardio.

Fewer calories.

Another supplement.

Another diet.

Another food you decide to eliminate.


But what if the problem isn't that you aren't trying hard enough?

What if some of the habits you think are helping you are simply not the right habits for your current metabolic health?


This is something I think we need to talk about more. Because “healthy” is not always as simple as the label makes it sound.


Healthy for whom? 

Let's take exercise for this example. 

You may be going for long runs, cycling for an hour or spending a lot of time on the treadmill, and that is not a bad thing. Aerobic exercise is good for your heart and lungs. It can improve insulin sensitivity, support cardiovascular health and help with weight management.


But there is another question I would ask: Where is your strength training? 

Your muscles are not just there to help you lift weights. Skeletal muscle is one of the major tissues involved in taking up glucose from your blood. Building and maintaining muscle therefore matters for metabolic health.


The current American Diabetes Association recommendations don't tell people to choose cardio instead of resistance training. They recommend both, with most adults with diabetes advised to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity each week and 2–3 resistance-training sessions on non-consecutive days.


And this is particularly important when you are trying to lose weight.

A recent systematic review and meta analysis found that adding resistance exercise during dietary weight loss helped protect against loss of fat-free mass and increased fat loss compared with diet alone. So if your entire exercise routine is cardio, I wouldn't tell you to stop.

I would tell you to add strength training. Because metabolic health is not just about how many calories you burn. It is also about the tissue you are building and maintaining.


Stop treating your body like a calculator.

The next problem is one I see all the time.

Calories. We have become very good at counting them.


1,500 calories.

1,800 calories.

2,000 calories.


We enter everything into an app and expect the body to behave like a spreadsheet. But your body is not a calculator.


It is a biological system. 

Two foods can contain similar amounts of calories and still be very different in terms of protein, fiber, micro nutrients, satiety and how they fit into your overall diet.


This doesn't mean calories don't matter. They absolutely do. 

If your goal is weight loss, energy balance still matters. But calories are not the whole story.


What makes up those calories matters too.

If you are constantly trying to push your calorie intake lower while ignoring protein, fiber and food quality, you may end up hungry, tired and struggling to preserve muscle. And that is not a sustainable nutrition plan.

Protein matters, but don't turn it into a numbers game


This brings me to protein.

We have gone from a world where nobody talked about protein to one where every second product in the supermarket seems to be “high protein”. And I am glad we are talking about protein. Protein is important for muscle maintenance, recovery and many other functions in the body. It becomes even more important when you are losing weight because you want to preserve as much lean mass as possible.


A 2024 systematic review found that higher protein intake can help support muscle mass, strength and physical function during weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity. 

But there is another point that often gets missed. "Where is your protein coming from?"

Protein quality matters. Different protein foods provide different amounts and proportions of essential amino acids, and they are digested and absorbed differently. This is one reason researchers use measures such as DIAAS to assess protein quality.


That doesn't mean plant proteins are “bad”.

They are not.

Dal, beans, lentils, soy, nuts and seeds can all be valuable parts of a healthy diet.


But if your diet is heavily plant based, you need to pay attention to the overall protein intake, food combinations and variety rather than assuming that the number printed on a packet tells you everything you need to know.

And if you eat animal foods, eggs, dairy, fish, chicken and other sources can make it easier to meet protein requirements.


The goal is not to declare one source good and another bad.

The goal is to make sure you are actually meeting your needs.

Don't let the “healthy” label do your thinking

This is one of my biggest problems with modern nutrition.


We have started trusting labels more than food.

  • “Low carb.”

  • “High protein.”

  • "Zero sugar.”

  • “Natural.”

  • “Multigrain.”

  • “Net carbs.”

  • “Gut friendly.”

These words can sound reassuring.

But turn the packet around.

Look at the ingredients.

Look at the protein.

Look at the fiber.

Look at the added sugar.

Look at the serving size.


And then ask yourself:

Is this actually helping me?

Take “net carbs”.

The idea is usually to subtract certain types of fiber or sugar alcohols from total carbohydrate. But that calculation doesn't tell you exactly how your blood glucose will respond to the food. And isolated or added fibers are not automatically equivalent to the fiber you get from eating whole foods.


So I would be careful about treating a “2 g net carb” label as a guarantee that your body will have a negligible glucose response.


The label describes the product. It doesn't describe your entire metabolism. 


This is where glucose monitors can help, but don't let them replace judgement.

Continuous glucose monitors have become much more accessible.

In the United States, the FDA cleared the first over-the-counter CGM for adults who are not using insulin in March 2024. It is intended to help people understand how lifestyle behaviors such as diet and exercise affect glucose levels.


That is an interesting development.

But a CGM is a tool. It is not a diagnosis.

And the number on the screen needs context. You might see your glucose rise after a meal.

That does not automatically mean the food is “bad”. Your glucose naturally rises after eating. The size and duration of the response matter, as does your overall health. And if you have concerns about your glucose regulation, don't diagnose yourself from an app.

Get the appropriate clinical testing and discuss the results with a qualified healthcare professional.

More data is not always better data. The value comes from knowing what to do with it.


Then there are the supplements. 

This is another trap. Something doesn't feel right, so we buy a supplement.


Low energy? A supplement.

Poor sleep? Another supplement.

Feeling inflamed? Another one.


Want better metabolism? There is probably a bottle for that too. And suddenly you have ten bottles sitting on your kitchen shelf.


I'm not against supplements. There are situations where targeted supplementation can be useful. 

But supplements should not become a substitute for the basics.


Even the FDA advises consumers to remember that supplements should not replace the variety of foods that make up a healthy diet, and that supplements can interact with medications or interfere with laboratory tests.


So before you add another supplement, ask yourself a simple question: What problem am I actually trying to solve?


If the answer is poor sleep, perhaps the first question should be about your sleep.

If the answer is poor nutrition, look at your diet.

If the answer is low muscle mass, look at protein and resistance training.

If the answer is an abnormal blood test, speak to someone who can interpret it properly.

Don't use a supplement to cover up a problem you haven't understood.


Your nutrition plan may simply be the wrong plan for you.

This, to me, is the biggest lesson.

There is no shortage of nutrition advice.

  • High carb.

  • Low carb.

  • Low fat.

  • High protein.

  • Intermittent fasting.

  • Mediterranean diet.

  • Keto.

  • Plant-based.

  • Paleo.

And the list keeps growing.


But a diet can be scientifically sound and still not be the right fit for a particular person. 


  • Your age matters.

  • Your activity matters.

  • Your muscle mass matters.

  • Your sleep matters.

  • Your medical history matters.

  • Your medications matter.

  • Your food preferences matter.

  • Your culture matters.

  • Your metabolic health matters.

The question shouldn't always be: “What is the healthiest diet?”

Sometimes the better question is: “What is the healthiest diet for this person?”


What should you do instead?

If you think your “healthy” routine isn't working, don't throw everything away.


Audit it.


Look at your exercise. Are you doing only cardio, or are you also training your muscles?

Look at your diet. Are you eating enough protein and fibre, or are you mainly focused on keeping calories low?

Look at your packaged foods. Are you trusting marketing claims without reading the full label?

Look at your supplements. Do you know why you are taking each one?

Look at your sleep. Are you giving your body enough time to recover?


And look at your health data. Are you relying on a smartwatch or CGM to tell you that everything is fine, or are you getting appropriate medical testing when something concerns you?


You don't need to change seven things at once.

Pick the one that is most obviously missing.


If you have been doing only cardio, add resistance training.

If you have been obsessively cutting calories, start paying attention to protein, fiber and food quality.

If you are eating mostly packaged “health” foods, replace some of them with actual whole foods.

If your supplement cupboard is overflowing, review what you are actually taking.

If your sleep is poor, work on that before buying another metabolism supplement.


Don't do the wrong things harder. Do the right things consistently.


Your body is not broken.

This is probably the most important thing I want you to take away.


If you are exercising, eating carefully and still not getting the results you expect, don't immediately assume that your body is broken. And don't assume that you simply need more discipline.

Sometimes the problem is the strategy. You may be putting enormous effort into something that isn't addressing the actual problem. You don't necessarily need more effort. You may need better direction.


Metabolic health is not built by one food, one supplement or one workout.

It is built by a combination of movement, muscle, nutrition, sleep, recovery and appropriate medical care. And that combination needs to make sense for your body.


So the next time you hear someone say, “This is healthy,” don't just ask: “Is it healthy?”


Ask: “Is it healthy for me, and is it helping me achieve what I actually want?” 

Because sometimes the biggest change you need to make isn't eating less, exercising more or buying another supplement. It is understanding what your body actually needs.


And once you understand that, you can stop doing the wrong things harder.

You can start doing the right things better.
