Understanding DHA

DHA, or docosahexanoic acid, is an important Omega 3 fatty acid that is necessary for good health. DHA is present in shrimp, crabs, and fishs, as well as some marine algae.

Humans can manufacture DHA from another omega 3 fatty acid, ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), which is present in foods like walnuts and flaxseed, whereas dietary intake of DHA is the most efficient means of acquiring this vital vitamin.

Only 1% of ALA is converted to DHA, making the process extremely inefficient. ALA is typically the only supply of DHA for vegetarians and vegans, despite its inefficiency.

DHA is one of the most important nutrients for human health. It is found in all cells and is an important structural component of brain, nerve, and eye cells. DHA’s role in cellular structure and function has been established through research throughout an individual’s life, from infancy to old age. At various phases of development, DHA depletion has been related to:

-Decreased cognitive development in new born

– Age-related macular degeneration

– Increased prevalence of ADHD

– Psychiatric and neurological illnesses such as depression

-Dementia

The intriguing finding of omega 3 fatty acid study, particularly in the case of DHA, is that although a shortage causes a variety of illnesses, increasing consumption offers a number of advantages. Increased DHA consumption, even in people with normal levels, has been linked to a variety of favourable health effects, including:

-Better brain and visual function in newborns who consume a high DHA diet

-Slower ageing rates

-Improvement in the management of excessive triglycerides and cholesterol

-Anti-inflammatory qualities that help reduce the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

There is a substantial amount of clinical evidence supporting the benefits of DHA, and a growing number of research are contributing to the body of evidence. DHA is an essential component of the human body, and ensuring that appropriate quantities of DHA are ingested on a regular basis is essential for good health.
