Ingredients of healthy kitchen- Turmeric

If you’ve spent any time in your kitchen, turmeric is almost certainly something you’ve come across on a daily basis.

Besides being an essential component of most Indian meals, it is also been used for its medicinal properties and even has made its way in rituals.

Turmeric in warm milk for a throat infection is often suggested, for a nasty wound it is said to apply turmeric paste for quick healing, turmeric in curd is used for stomach problems, and brides cover themselves in turmeric paste at their wedding’s “haldi” ritual.

Turmeric’s power comes from a group of chemicals known as curcuminoids. Curcumin is the most significant of them, as it is a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Curcumin has been shown to have the following properties:

#1 Powerful anti inflammatory properties

Curcumin has a potent anti-inflammatory impact that is equivalent to that of certain anti-inflammatory medications, but with none of the negative side effects! Chronic inflammation has been related to a variety of ‘lifestyle’ illnesses, including metabolic syndrome and cancer.

Combating chronic inflammation can aid in the prevention or improvement of certain illnesses’ health outcomes. On a molecular level, curcumin can reduce inflammation.

Curcumin has been found to help with inflammatory disorders including arthritis and heart disease because of its anti-inflammatory characteristics.

#2 Fight Viruses & Bacteria

Curcumin has been found to combat bacteria, viruses, and even fungus, so it’s no surprise that Ayurvedic scriptures suggest turmeric for anything from wounds and scrapes to throat infections!

Turmeric has been demonstrated in study to help combat H.pylori infections, which are the cause of stomach ulcers.

#3 May help fight cancer

Curcumin has been proven in laboratory and animal tests to inhibit the development of malignant cells. It has been proven to decrease tumors by as much as 40% in small-scale human trials.

In addition to these benefits, curcumin improves chemotherapy effectiveness by shielding healthy, non-cancerous cells from destruction, which is the primary source of chemotherapy adverse effects.

#4 Strong antioxidant capacities

Curcumin not only neutralises free radicals that cause cell damage, but it also encourages our bodies to produce more antioxidant enzymes on their own (like glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase).

Our bodies’ natural defense against free radicals is made up of enzymes like these. Curcumin, in addition to being an antioxidant, becomes a very effective weapon against free radical damage when its synthesis is increased.

#5 Boost brain function

Curcumin and turmeric supplementation has been shown in studies to assist with neurological disorders including depression and perhaps Alzheimer’s disease.

Curcumin’s effects were shown to be equivalent to those of Prozac in a short research. Another laboratory investigation revealed a potential preventive effect against Alzheimer’s disease development.

While the effective dose for these health advantages is likely larger than the amount of turmeric we’d get through food, it’s intriguing to think that a common spice has the ability to protect us from nearly every illness we’re concerned about today!
