Indian Genes Need Indian Diet – NRI Diet for Indians abroad

When Kulwant Singh, an Indian origin man who lives in Toronto, Canada, visited a dietitian for nutrition guideline for himself, he was looking for some experienced person who understands his eating habits & specific needs and able to integrate the same in his diet plan.

But he was left disappointed as the foreign dietitian asked him to completely avoid Stuffed Paranthas, pickles, Ghee, curries, and sweets, which are staple foods on Indian platter. The dietitian lacked the understanding of Kulwant Singh’s native cuisine. He also didn’t take into account his food choices, likes & dislikes, genetics and provided him with a standard diet plan which didn’t have any Indian foods.

Indian food culture is diverse. It consists of a wide variety of regional and traditional cuisines which have different cooking methods, uses different ingredients & spices and some are also specific to seasonal requirements. No two Indians, even who hails from the same background or from the same family, eats the same food. This makes it difficult for a foreign dietitian to understand the specific requirements of Indians living abroad.

Nevertheless, Kulwant decided to go ahead with the plan but found it extremely hard to understand the ingredients. Though he used to cook & eat foreign dishes, it always had a touch of Indian spices and ingredients in the dish so as to make it as his kind of cuisine. So now the Indian genes in Kulwant found it hard to follow this change in diet.

Indians, who are based outside India, would still have Indian genes in them. No matter which part of the world they are in, their genes would still process foods as an Indian gene. It would at least take 10,000 years for them to live in that country to change their genetic profile. Also, due to the communication barrier, Kulwant found it difficult to put across his message as the language and dialect was different.

Not satisfied with the state of things, Kulwant decided to consult an Indian nutritionist, who he believed would be able to understand his needs better and his research led him to QUA Nutrition, in whom he found a team who not only understood his choices and needs better but also were easy to connect and communicate, even though they were based in India.

Before suggesting nutrition guideline for Kulwant, several factors like food choices, likes & dislikes, genetics, cross-cultural influences, the local flavors, the specific availabilities, the different seasons, prevailing medical conditions etc were taken into account. Kulwnat’s wife, who usually used to cook food at home, was also included in the process of designing a customized nutrition plan to understand the ingredients and spices that she uses to cook the food & her comfortability to cook certain dishes.

Through Nutrition gene test, Kulwant’s nutritional requirements based on the genetic makeup were analyzed. It also helped to check how his body was responding to different foods and nutrients. Kulwant discovered that he was lactose intolerant and his dairy products diet was causing him the troubles.

The genetic test also helped in understanding the lineage of health conditions in the family and if he had inherited any gene which is causing him health trouble or can lead to serious medical conditions. Kulwant was genetically inclined to gain weight, a major contributor to blood pressure and diabetes.

All factors & analytical data captured were incorporated in his diet, to provide him with an exclusively customized nutrition plan for a better healthy lifestyle.
